Problem With Wireless ... (WRT54G)

Ok people wonder if anyone can help ...

i am on HACKED 10mb ... if i use it straight into ethernet i get the full 10mb no problems

however i use a linksys WRT54G wireless router - when downloading via it the download maxs out at around 500-600 kbps ...signal is no issue router is 10 cms from laptop

anyone any ideas ? or remedies its doing my head in
